A Story Grown, Not Made….
Before it became an object of beauty, the calabash was first grown – nurtured on Kenyan soil, shaped by sun, rain, and time.
Once harvested, the gourd was left to dry naturally, its shell slowly hardening as the interior released its life.
Only then was it opened, hollowed, and smoothed by hand – a gentle dialogue between artisan and material.
Carved into its surface were symbols passed down through generations.
Lines, patterns, and figures that spoke of protection, abundance, and the sacred bond between people and land. Nothing was decorative without meaning.
The vessel was then sealed using nature’s own offerings
– beeswax, milk, herbs – allowing it to serve daily life while honoring ritual.
Used to hold milk, honey, grain, or ceremonial brews, the calabash became a companion to life’s most intimate moments.
At Modara, we preserve these vessels not as relics, but as living heritage.
Each calabash carries the rhythm of a slower world – one where objects were grown with intention, shaped with reverence, and meant to last.
This is not décor.
It is ancestry, held in form.
